Press Release

MIAMI,  January 20, 2016 – Sony Pictures Television (SPT) Networks announced today that it has concluded a deal with Perform Media Channels Limited to bring the highly popular Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) competitive sporting events exclusively to Canal Sony in Latin America beginning 2017.
Next January, viewers will be able to enjoy more than 32 WTA events throughout the season on both Canal Sony and its TV Everywhere offerings, including key competitive events like the Premier and Premier 5 tournaments, plus the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. The channel will offer local commentary for most matches, with on-the-ground event coverage for tournaments that have strong local interest. In addition, Canal Sony will profile top and emerging Latin American players with specials and segments that bring their personal stories to life.
“Live sports are a great fit with our channel brand because they are an emotional and engaging TV experience. Tennis is particularly appealing because it connects with Canal Sony’s core upscale audience and offers the type of appointment TV that will bring new viewers to the channel,” said TC Schultz, executive vice president & managing director, networks, Latin America & Brazil for SPT.
“We are delighted that Sony Pictures Television is committed to bringing live women’s tennis to their viewers in Latin America, to sit alongside their already impressive lineup of high quality entertainment. This agreement will allow us to greatly increase our reach in the region and expand our audience beyond the traditional sports fan,” said Bruno Rocha, executive vice president of WTA Media.
The WTA is the global leader in women’s professional sport with more than 2,500 players representing 92 nations competing for a record $129 million in prize money. The current WTA competitive season includes 57 events and four Grand Slams in 33 countries. In 2015, 395 million fans watched the WTA on television and digital channels around the world.
Canal Sony is a popular Latin America general entertainment channel offering an array of high-quality content. The channel’s lineup includes some of Hollywood’s most popular dramas like The Blacklist, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder and Marvel's Agents of SHIELD; comedies like The Muppets and How I Met Your Mother; plus the hit singing competition The Voice. The channel also features locally-produced original content including the soon-to-premiere Top Chef Mexico.
