SONY PICTURES TELEVISION TO UNMASKTRUE STORY OF ICONIC MEXICAN WRESTLER BLUE DEMON IN LATEST CO-PRODUCTION WITH TELEVISA

Series to debut across Latin America on Televisa’s platforms

MIAMI BEACH, January 19, 2015 — Sony Pictures Television (SPT) announced today that its latest co-production with Televisa will be Blue Demon, a teleseries based on the life of Alejandro Muñoz Moreno, the famous blue masked fighter who managed to become one of Mexico’s greatest professional wrestlers of all time.

The 65-episode, one-hour drama will air across Latin America on multiple Televisa platforms. SPT and Televisa will jointly distribute Blue Demon throughout the rest of the world. Production on the series is slated to begin in April in and around Mexico City.

“There is a growing demand in the region for stories about real people and events, a trend which started in Colombia and has now made its way to Mexico,” says Angelica Guerra, senior vice president and managing director, production, Latin America and U.S. Hispanic for SPT. “Blue Demon will offer audiences an intimate look at one of Luche Libre’s greatest legends, exploring a complex and turbulent world that very few knew about.”

Blue Demon is inspired by the real-life story of Alejandro Muñoz Moreno, who overcame enormous odds to become the World Wrestling Champion under the name Blue Demon. The series begins in Nuevo Leon, where a young Alejandro, the son of farmers and the fifth of twelve children, dreams of a bigger life than his small hometown. Years later, after setting off to live with an uncle and work on the railroad in Monterrey, a strong and strapping young man has a chance meeting with a famous wrestler, Ignacio Vera, who piques his interest in the colorful national sport of freestyle wrestling, Lucha Libre. Alejandro sets out on an incredible journey, conquering his fears and confronting personal demons, to ultimately become one of the most revered masked wrestlers of all time.

The series is directed by Mauricio Cruz and written by Carlos Algara, Alejandro Martínez, Fernando Abrego, Luis Guerrero, Larissa Andrade and Rodrigo Ordoñez.  Daniel Ucros and Juan Pablo Posada serve as executive producers.

Sony Pictures Television develops, adapts, produces hundreds of hours of original Spanish-language programming a year for audiences across Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic market. The studio boasts a robust portfolio of high-caliber primetime teleseries programming that includes Lady, La Vendedora de Rosas, Anónima, En la Boca del Lobo, and Bloque de Búsqueda. Blue Demon is the latest co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Televisa, following El Dandy and Señorita Pólvora.
