SONY PICTURES TELEVISION AND TELEVISA UNVEIL SECOND CO-PRODUCTION, EL DANDY

Teleseries, Starring Alfonso “Poncho” Herrera and Damian Alcazar, to Air Across Multiple Televisa Platforms in Mexico and on UniMás in the U.S.

MIAMI BEACH, FL, January 20, 2015 — Sony Pictures Television (SPT) and Televisa announced today that their second co-production will be “El Dandy,” a new original teleseries based on the critically acclaimed film “Donnie Brasco.”  The series is currently in production in and around Mexico City.

The 70-episode, one-hour drama will air across multiple Televisa platforms in Mexico as well as UniMás in the U.S.

“El Dandy” is also being sold across the Latin American and U.S. Hispanic markets by Sony Pictures Television, while Televisa will distribute across the east and south of Europe; SPT and Televisa will jointly distribute the series throughout the rest of the world.

“This is an auspicious time for our production business in Latin America as we look to produce an unprecedented number of scripted primetime series in 2015,” says Angelica Guerra, senior vice president and managing director, Production, Latin America and U.S. Hispanic for SPT. “’El Dandy’ is one of our most ambitious projects to date and we have worked very closely with Televisa to put together some tremendous talent behind it.”

“As part of the long-term coproduction agreement between Sony Pictures Television and Televisa, we are pleased to announce the launch of ‘El Dandy’, which shows the joint capabilities of both companies,” says Fernando Perez Gavilan, vice president for Televisa International. “In a competitive environment, the production values, edgy stories, and continuity offered by our series distinguish us in the market and certainly earn the audience´s preference.”

“As we have seen with ‘Senorita Polvora,’ there is a strong appetite across the region for high-caliber, locally-produced teleseries,” says Alexander Marin, senior vice president, Distribution, Latin America & US Hispanic for Sony Pictures Television. “‘El Dandy’ is a fast-paced and edgy drama that taps into a well-known story and characters, so we are confident it will draw similar interest.”

Inspired by the 1997 American crime drama “Donnie Brasco,” “El Dandy” tells the story of a criminal science professor who is recruited by the state prosecutor’s elite special operations program to infiltrate one of Mexico’s most notorious drug rings. Under the assumed name of Daniel ‘El Dandy’ Bracho, he sets about identifying all of the members of this clandestine ring; however he quickly finds that his keen ability for police work is matched only by the thrilling sense of danger he experiences living life on the edge. Along the way, he enlists the help of a loyal-yet-crooked petty criminal named El Chueco, who quickly befriends Bracho and comes dangerously close to discovering his true identity. The deeper Bracho goes into the mafia, the more entangled he becomes, and the once incorruptible professor must choose between returning to an ordinary life as an upstanding citizen or fully embracing his criminal side. “El Dandy” stars Alfonso “Poncho” Herrera (“Amar te Duele,” “El Diez”) as El Dandy and Damián Alcázar (“The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” “El Crimen del Padre Amaro”) as El Chueco.  The series is written by Larissa Andrade and Rodrigo Ordoñez, and directed by Chava Cartas and Mauricio Cruz. Daniel Ucros and Gabriela Valentan serve as executive producers.

Sony Pictures Television develops, adapts, produces and co-produces hundreds of hours of original Spanish-language programming a year for audiences across Latin America, the U.S. Hispanic market, and around the world. The studio pioneered the teleseries genre and today boasts a robust portfolio of high-caliber primetime programming that includes “El Mariachi,” “Metástasis,” “En la Boca del Lobo,” “Lady, La Vendedora de Rosas” and the recently-announced “Anónima.” “El Dandy” marks Sony Pictures Television’s second co-production with Televisa, following “Señorita Pólvora.”

Televisa has traditionally been the leader in production of novelas, which are seen in more than 100 countries. Recently, Televisa decided to be an equally important global player in the production of series targeting different audiences, but taking advantage of its experience, production values, proven library and well-known casting. Thus, working with important players like Sony Pictures Television, RCN, Caracol, RTI, Nickelodeon, Turner and Disney, Televisa has co-produced successful series like “La Viuda Negra,” “Señorita Polvora,” “La Madame,” “La Fiesta del Chivo,” “La Esquina del Diablo,” “Tiro de Gracia”; and for younger audiences “La CQ,” “Miss XV,” “Dreams,” “Sueña Conmigo,” and “Rebelde Rio” among others.

UniMás, a leading Hispanic broadcast network in the U.S., is part of Univision Communications Inc. and offers high quality alternative series, Hollywood movies and some of the most popular sporting events.
