LONDON, 16 December 2014 — Sony Pictures Television has inked a multi season deal for hit US sitcom The Goldbergs with UK broadcaster Channel 4.
The series will be shown on Channel 4's youth-skewing digital channel E4 and season one is set to air in early 2015.
The Goldbergs first premiered in the US on ABC in September 2013 with a debut audience of more than 11 million, and the first series averaged seven million viewers across its 23 episode run.
Announcing the sale, Mike Wald, executive vice president, international distribution for Sony Pictures Television, said: “The Goldbergs have already proved to be immensely popular with viewers in the US with the show's brilliant blend of humour, nostalgia and original storytelling. Following our recent sale of hit comedy Marry Me, it will make a great addition to E4’s new year programming."
The Goldbergs is a single-cam comedy starring Jeff Garlin (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids) and George Segal (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). The series is based loosely on showrunner Adam Goldberg’s own upbringing and is told from the perspective of youngest child Adam (Sean Giambrone), documenting the foibles of daily family life with his video camera, showcasing his relatives’ eccentric characters and growing up in the 1980s.
The Goldbergs is produced by Happy Madison Productions, Adam F. Goldberg Productions and Exhibit A Productions in conjunction with Sony Pictures Television.
Channel 4 also picked up Sony Pictures Television's ratings hit comedy Marry Me for E4 earlier this year. From the makers of Happy Endings, Marry Me premiered in the U.S. in October and is NBC’s No. 1 comedy this season.
