SONY PICTURES TELEVISION TAKES RAYMOND TO CZECH REPUBLIC

London 10 October 2014: Sony Pictures Television (SPT) today announced its first ever scripted format deal in the Czech Republic for a local version of hit US sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

The country’s public broadcaster Czech TV has ordered a full season of 12x30’ episodes to be produced by local production company Film Brigade. The show will be known locally as Everybody Loves Rudy (w/t) and goes into production this year with a view to premiering on the national free-to-air channel in the autumn next year.

Announcing the deal, Jeff Lerner, who has recently been promoted to executive vice president, scripted programming, Sony Pictures Television said: “Everybody Loves Raymond is perfect for local adaptation with its universal, familiar and relatable themes. Local versions of this great show have proved very popular with diverse audiences, and we look forward to adding the Czech Republic to our growing ‘family’ of Raymonds in the region.”

Jan Štern, producer, Czech Television, said: “Everybody Loves Raymond is a family sitcom that appeals to a wide audience. It reflects a situation that is typical of many Czech families:  parents being overprotective and overcaring, and behaving as though their chidlren’s households are in fact their own. We expect a positive response on the part of our viewers.“

To date, Everybody Loves Raymond has been adapted successfully in the Middle East, Poland, Israel and Russia, where the show has proved to be particularly popular.

Sony Pictures Television first produced a Russian version of the sitcom, known locally as The Voronins, for broadcaster CTC in 2009. In 2011, after adapting all US scripts, SPT announced it was developing 60 original episodes to meet the channel’s ongoing demand. SPT continues to create original episodes of the franchise with a new order of 40, recently announced, bringing the total number of episodes to 356 in what will be its sixth season.
The Emmy award-winning comedy originally ran on CBS in the US from 1996 to 2005 and proved a ratings hit with viewers. The show revolves around the life of sports writer Raymond Barone, his wife Debra and his parents who live across the street.

Everybody Loves Raymond is one of a number of formats and series Sony Pictures Television is taking to MIPCOM. Other shows include hit horror game show Release The Hounds and drama series such as Outlander, Powers and Battle Creek, as well as comedy series Marry Me
