SONY PICTURES TELEVISION AND MBC GROUP BRING LATIN AMERICAN TELESERIES EL MARIACHI TO THE MIDDLE EAST
LONDON, September 29, 2014 — Sony Pictures Television announced today that it will bring the original scripted series El Mariachi to the Middle East. Free-to-air satellite broadcasting company MBC Group has secured the rights to the 71-episode, one-hour teleseries drama to air on MBC Action in 2015.
“We believe that the best stories have universal appeal. While El Mariachi is especially relevant to a Latin American audience, there is a style and sensibility to this series and these characters that will also resonate with Middle Eastern viewers,” says Ziad Yaghi, vice president, distribution, Middle East and Turkey for Sony Pictures Television.
“As the world’s largest free-to-air male targeted entertainment channel, we at Action are always looking for the next big thing to entertain our viewers. With its fast pace and gripping storyline, El Mariachi will fit in very nicely with the rest of our content, which includes the best of TV from around the world,” added Rupert Morling, senior channel manager, MBC Action.
El Mariachi follows a young mariachi musician, Martín Aguirre (Iván Arana, Soy tu Fan), who is mistaken as a legendary fugitive and inadvertently thrown into a war with the Mexican cartels. After being unjustly imprisoned, Martín escapes to seek revenge against those who wronged him, regain his honor and fight for the woman he loves, Celeste Sandoval (Marta Higareda, Street Kings). The teleseries is directed by Chava Cartas and Mauricio Cruz, and written by Lina Uribe and Dario Vanegas. Daniel Ucros and Gabriela Valentan serve as executive producers.
Earlier this year, El Mariachi entertained audiences across Latin America on AXN, as well as in the U.S. on MundoFOX. The series was produced in Mexico by Sony Pictures Television’s production company Teleset.
Sony Pictures Television develops, adapts, produces and co-produces hundreds of hours of original Spanish-language programming a year for audiences across Latin America, the U.S. Hispanic market, and around the world. The studio pioneered the teleseries genre and today boasts a robust portfolio of top-quality programming that includes El Mariachi and Metástasis, as well as the upcoming En la Boca del Lobo, Señorita Pólvora and Lady, La Vendedora de Rosas.
