DRAGONS' DEN EXPANDS GLOBAL PORTFOLIO
London, 3 September 2014 – Sony Pictures Television (SPT) announced that it has concluded a number of deals that will bring global hit format, Dragons’ Den, to new territories across Europe and Africa – while Shark Tank returns for a sixth season in the US.
South Africa will air its first season of Dragons’ Den this September. The 12 episodes of the hit format will be produced by Rapid Blue for M-Net’s Mzansi Magic cable channel.
In Portugal, a deal was struck with Take & Sound Productions and Blue Pipeline to produce 13 episodes of the format for commercial broadcaster SIC. The Portuguese series is scheduled to air in 2015.
The format has also been sold in Sweden, where Viasat’s channel TV8 has ordered 10 episodes of the show – titled Drakna?stet - produced by ITV Studios Nordic.
Meanwhile Shark Tank, the US version which airs on ABC, won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Structured Reality programme last week. Season five was its highest rating season to date, regularly making ABC the most watched network on Friday nights, and Shark Tank returns for a sixth season later this month.
The format continues to go from strength to strength in other territories. Germany’s Die Höhle des Löwen recently debuted on VOX to critical acclaim with 1.8m viewers, banking the greatest audience of the day for the broadcaster and beating its slot average by +32% for All Individuals.
Jane Dockery, senior vice president, formats, international distribution for SPT, said: ”Dragons’ Den continues to strike a chord with audiences around the globe and has become a firm family favourite in many countries. We now have close to 30 adaptations for the show worldwide. It remains one of the world’s most successful business shows and we’re already in talks with several other new territories.“
Dragons’ Den, created by NTV and distributed internationally by SPT, gives budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to secure life-changing sums of money and expertise from some of the biggest names in business. The cash-strapped hopefuls pitch to an intimidating panel of venture capitalists in the hope of securing the millionaires’ financial backing to help build their fledgling business or idea into a thriving company.
Dragons’ Den is one of the world’s most successful business shows with local versions produced in countries including the US (Shark Tank), UK, Canada, Australia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Nigeria, Turkey, Poland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Germany and Spain. The show is currently in its 12th series in the UK (BBC Two).
