GERMANY AND SPAIN BRING IN THE DRAGONS

Sony Pictures Television confirms Dragons’ Den deals with TVE and VOX

Cannes, 7 October 2013: Broadcasters in Germany and Spain have inked deals with Sony Pictures Television (SPT) for local versions of popular factual entertainment format Dragons’ Den. The latest deals, announced today by SPT, take the total number of local versions of the hit business show to 24 internationally. This news comes as US version for ABC, called Shark Tank, has just returned to primetime schedules for its fifth season with its highest ratings in the history of the show to date, up 12% over last year.

SPT Productions Germany will produce a series of the popular factual format for major commercial broadcaster, VOX. The local version, which will be called Die Höhle des Löwen (Lions’ Den), is due to go into production in January 2014.

In Spain, public service broadcaster Television Española (TVE) has commissioned the format, marking the first time a local version will air in the territory.  Spanish production company Pulso TV will produce the show.

Keith LeGoy, president of international distribution at SPT, said: “Dragons’ Den has been transformative for budding inventors and entrepreneurs all over the world and now national broadcasters in two of Europe’s biggest economies are set to create their own versions for the first time. With the backdrop of economic challenges there has never been a more apt time to offer programming that inspires new business ideas and encourages emerging talent.”

Dragons’ Den, created by NTV and distributed internationally by SPT, gives budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to secure life-changing sums of money and expertise from some of the biggest names in business. The cash-strapped hopefuls pitch to an intimidating panel of venture capitalists in the hope of securing the millionaires’ financial backing to help build their fledgling business or idea into a thriving company.

Dragons’ Den is one of the world’s most successful business shows with local versions already produced in countries such as the USA (Shark Tank), UK, Canada, Australia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Nigeria, Turkey, Poland, Sweden and Czech Republic . The show is currently in its 11th series in the UK (BBC Two) while a new fifth season of Shark Tank is now airing on ABC in the US.
